Since its inception in the mid-1970s, the adoption of Ethernet networking has continued to go from strength to strength, and is now the dominant wired networking technology in our homes, retail outlets, industrial plants, offices, telecoms infrastructure, and even cars.
This article looks at Ethernet's rise during the nascent IT computer networking era through to the current day. We explore its growth into operational technology (OT), and delve into some of the recent developments, such as SPE, TSN over SPE, IO-Link over SPE, PoE, and PoDL.
