Enspec Point-on-Wave system will be used to mitigate inrush currents
16Oct
Enspec Power Limited has been awarded the contract to supply and commission a Point-on-Wave switching system to TAQA Group Brae Fields offshore oil rig.
The Point-on-Wave system will be used to mitigate inrush currents when energising the sites 40MVA step-up transformer. The step-up transformer is fed by a number of generators; under a black start condition the site needs to get auxiliary power to all locations as quickly as possible and so needs to energise the transformers and offshore cables using only one generator. Traditionally, the inrush current of the 40MVA transformer meant that this was not possible, and the site would have to wait until all generators were online before restoring auxiliary power.
The transformer energisation also energises more than 30km of offshore 33kV cable.
Enspec supported TAQA with power systems modelling to assess the suitability of Point-on-Wave under these circumstances.
The system will be delivered and installed over the next month, with commissioning set to take place before the end of the year.
