Energy efficiency of the TopTherm fan and filter units fitted with single-phase AC motors may be improved in operation by the addition of either a simple thermostat or more sophisticated fan speed control. Rittal’s speed controller adjusts the speed of the fan in accordance with the demand for cooling, reducing noise and energy consumption when cooling is not required. It also incorporates a fault alarm activated in the event of the temperature of the air inside the enclosure rising above a predetermined level, an interruption in the supply to the fan, a sensor short-circuit, or a failure in the supply to the controller itself. Not only does this device increase maintenance intervals and reduce energy consumption, it also alerts users to potential problems. Most of the existing range of TopTherm fan and filter units are available with 24Vdc motors, which exhibit a significant reduction in power consumption over the 230Vac and 115Vac motor variants.
