Welcome to PBSI’s first issue of 2021! Whilst the cold winter nights mean that the average person’s heating bill rises, for data centres, freezing temperatures may cause serious issues.
For the Nordic region and parts of North America, which will see temperatures of -15 to -30ºC over the winter months, cold weather-related obstacles for data centre construction and maintenance could result in vital facilities not being operational for the entire winter.
Temporary temperature control specialist Aggreko warns that, while operators and providers in the region may have planned for construction phases, like excavation, to be carried out before the ground freezes, COVID-related delays may mean that such stages have to be pushed back. It is at this point that data centre providers need to implement temporary heating to thaw the frozen ground for excavation to continue.
