A comparison of UK, USA and Canada equipment certification requirements for Panels & Systems

This article explores the commercial opportunities of exporting equipment designs to perceived significant growth markets like the USA. It delves into some of the regulatory considerations that need to be addressed in order to take advantage of such opportunities.
Many manufacturers will have plenty of knowledge and experience with their home market – the UK. Some have many decades of experience but also a good many may only just be starting up and ‘learning the ropes’, so to speak.
Certainly, most will be quite familiar and reasonably comfortable with the CE marking regulations which are the current product-related regulations for many types of equipment. Next year (2021) will usher in Brexit in full as the withdrawal agreement expires, and there is still much uncertainty about what will happen with equipment certifications. Regardless, for many, CE marking will continue to be very important, as many companies will still be doing business extensively in the EU.
A good starting point is to become aware of the higher-level legislation when considering the North American markets, and how these compare to the approach we’re used to in the UK.
