Siemens has prepared a new white paper for electrical installers and control panel designers to help ensure IEC compliance when planning the electrical equipment of machines in the future.Last October, the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) published a new version of the IEC 60204-1 Standard on the Safety of Machinery – Electrical Equipment of Machines – Part 1: General Requirements. The EN 60204-1, which is the European equivalent of the IEC Standard, forms a vital foundation for ensuring that the electrical equipment of machines is compliant with technical regulations applicable in the European Union (EU). The standard also encompasses machine control cabinets and panels. The new version is scheduled to be adopted by the Official Journal of the EU at the end of the winter 2017/ at the beginning of 2018. By this time at the latest, panel builders and electrical installers ought to have familiarized themselves with its contents. To simplify things, Siemens has published an extensive white paper offering an overview of all the changes and explaining each point in detail. The white paper is available for downloading free of charge at www.siemens.com/iec60204. The most important revisions include“applications involving power drive systems”, “electromagnetic compatibility”, “short circuit current rating of electrical equipment”, as well as “overcurrent protection” and “protective bonding system”.
